🌱 Why Eco-Friendly Cleaning Matters in Dorm Life: The Green Laundress Joins Forces with Move-In Day Mafia
Last month, The Green Laundress had the honor of partnering with an incredible organization called Move-In Day Mafia. Their mission is simple but powerful: support foster youth who are pursuing higher education at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) by fully furnishing and designing their dorm rooms — at no cost to the students.
As a proud HBCU graduate myself, this work touched my heart deeply. College move-in is a milestone moment, but for youth coming out of foster care, it can be filled with uncertainty, financial stress, and gaps in support. Move-In Day Mafia changes that narrative by ensuring these students step into a space that feels like home from day one.
This year, The Green Laundress joined in by donating eco-friendly cleaning products — for both the student volunteers preparing dorms and the students themselves. Every young person received their own glass bottle of our Multi-Purpose Cleaner to start their journey with a safe, sustainable solution in hand.
🧼 Why Dorm Life Needs Eco-Friendly Cleaning
Dorm living means close quarters — shared bathrooms, common kitchens, tight bedrooms, and not much ventilation. In those environments, conventional cleaning products loaded with harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances aren’t just inconvenient — they can be harmful.
- Air quality suffers in small spaces where toxins linger.
- Skin sensitivities and allergies are triggered by harsh ingredients.
- Environmental impact grows as students rely on disposable plastic bottles and chemical-heavy cleaners.
That’s why introducing plant-based, non-toxic alternatives early is so important. Our products are tough on dirt but gentle on people and the planet — exactly what students need as they step into independence.
💚 A Day of Service and Impact
The Move-In Day Mafia event was a celebration of community, resilience, and excellence. Volunteers worked tirelessly to outfit rooms with furniture, décor, and personal touches that reflected each student’s style. Professional designers even curated spaces, turning bare dorms into beautiful, welcoming sanctuaries.
The Green Laundress role? Ensuring those rooms started fresh — not just visually, but health-wise. Volunteers used our eco-friendly cleaners to prep dorms, making sure every space was safe, clean, and ready for move-in.
